Translated by Harold Shadick. Map, black and white photographic plates, xxiii + 277pp, notes, appendix, glossary, deacquisitioned ex-library copy with usual stamps and markings, covers fairly marked and worn, spine sunned, a sound secondhand hardback copy. Very popular when the novel was first published in 1907, it was at that time thought to have been written before the Boxer Rebellion and thus became seen as something of a work of prophecy. In actual fact, though Liu was writing this after the Boxer Rebellion, the novel does "prophecise" the 1910 revolution, though Liu believed the outcome would be a failure, not the success it was. An influential novel at the time, in these pages Liu looks at the changes going on in China, including the need to change attitudes to women, the corruption of officials and life in China at the end of the Qing Dynasty.
