pp. xi, (i), 136. Full brown morocco, marbled end-papers, all edges gilt, the spine with a small tear to the head, end-papers foxed, Sherborne school book-plate, signature of W. J. BENSLEY, Uppingham in pencil on the front blank, overall a nice copy. *In the period November 1875 to March 1876, Uppingham town and the school, suffered from an epidemic of typhoid, as a result of which the school's trustees decided to evacuate to a safe place. The new location was the Cambrian Hotel, at Borth, a coastal village 7 miles north of Aberystwyth, in Mid-Wales. Skrine's account gives an amusing coverage of this dramatic event and of the twelve months stay. The Appendix reprints the piece in the Cambrian News, April 1877, describing the farewell from Borth - 'Shortly after seven o'clock a procession of the inhabitants was formed, and, headed by a flag-bearer, made its way to the square in front of the Cambrian Hotel, where several songs were sung by the assembly under the school-master's (Mr. Jones's) direction; and at the conclusion a hearty round of cheers was given for the Uppingham School, who immediately responded by making the place ring again with three enthusiastic cheers for Borth.' In 1943, the Reverend W. J. BENSLEY bequeathed three houses to Sherborne School including the Second Master's house.
