Die Handlung tritt dabei in den Hintergrund, ebensowenig existiert ein konventioneller Spannungsbogen. So umfassen der erste und der dritte Teil des Buches jeweils nur einige Stunden im Leben einer Feriengesellschaft auf der Insel Skye, während im zweiten Teil zehn Jahre auf wenigen Seiten zusammengerafft werden. Die eingehende Beschreibung dessen, was im Bewußtsein der Personen vor sich geht, führt dazu, daß das Leben an sich betrachtet wird, daß zentrale Fragen des Lebens aufgeworfen werden. Zu denen gehört sicherlich auch die Frage nach der Identität einer Person. Als gesellschaftliches Lebewesen ist der Mensch verschiedenen Erwartungen hinsichtlich seiner sozialen Rolle ausgesetzt, die sich auf seine Identität und auch auf seine Beziehungen zu anderen Menschen auswirken. Die Gesellschaft im Roman ist stark von den Wertvorstellungen des viktorianischen Zeitalters bestimmt. Gegenstand dieser Arbeit ist die Beziehung zwischen zwei unterschiedlichen Frauen in dieser Gesellschaft: Mrs. Ramsay verkörpert dabei die Rolle der viktorianischen Ehefrau und Mutter, die sich für ihre Familie aufopfert, während es sich bei Lily Briscoe um eine jüngere, alleinstehende Frau handelt, die ihren Platz im Leben sucht. Zunächst wird Mrs. Ramsay in ihrer Rolle als Angel in the House dargestellt, wobei auch auf das Frauenbild der damaligen Gesellschaft eingegangen wird. Von Bedeutung ist hier auch die Beziehung zu ihrem Ehemann, welche durch spezifische Rollenmuster bestimmt ist. Weiterhin werden die mythischen Ursprünge der Rolle der Frau analysiert, die es den Frauen überaus schwer machen, die patriarchalischen Strukturen zu durchbrechen. Lily Briscoe gelingt dies auch nur nach einem schwierigen Prozeß der Ablösung von Mrs. Ramsay. Denn obwohl die zwei nicht miteinander verwandt sind, herrscht ein Mutter-Tochter- Konflikt zwischen ihnen. Dessen Lösung soll hier aufgezeigt werden. So schafft es Lily, die Wahrheit über das Leben, die sie erst in Mrs. Ramsay sucht, schließlich in sich selbst zu finden. Den Wunsch, sich mit Mrs. Ramsay zu identifizieren, verliert sie mit Hilfe ihrer Malerei im Laufe des Trauerprozesses, auf den besonderes Augenmerk gerichtet werden soll. 24 pp. Deutsch.

Diese ermöglichen es dem Autor eine Begebenheit aus seiner privaten, direkten Umgebung oder aber aus einem größeren gesellschaftlichen Umfeld mit dem Schreiben aufzuarbeiten und gleichzeitig dem Rezipienten zu eröffnen und näher zu bringen. So nimmt auch die Autorin Virginia Woolf in ihren Werken Bezug auf Menschen aus ihrem direkten Umfeld. Sie sagt selbst das Schreiben habe für sie eine ähnlich Funktion wie ein Psychoanalyse. Sie befreie sich dadurch von Emotionen und Gefühlen die sie lange Zeit beschäftigten und in gleichem Maße belasteten. So beschreibt sie in ihrem Roman To the Lighthouse, wenn auch nicht in Form einer reinen Biographie, sondern fiktional erweitert, ihre Kindheit in Cornwall. Zusätzlich zu diesen biographischen Zusammenhängen lassen sich besonders im ersten Teil des dreigeteilten Romans Bezüge zu anderen Autoren finden. Neben der bloßen Nennung des Namens, wie beispielsweise Marcel Proust, als eine Form der Bezugnahme, bekommt Intertextualität in diesem Zusammenhang besondere Bedeutung. Obwohl sich im Roman mehrfach derartige Bezüge auf Werke anderer Autoren wie z.B. Alfred Lord Tennysons Gedicht The Charge of the Light Bridge und Shakespeares Sonett 98 finden lassen, scheint jedoch im ersten Teil die intertextuelle Einbindung des Märchens Der Fischer und seine Frau der Brüder Grimm zu dominieren. Erstmals wurde das Märchen vermutlich vom Maler Philipp Otto Runge 1806 auf Plattdeutsch aufgezeichnet und mit seiner Erlaubnis später von Achim von Arnim in der Zeitung für Einsiedler publiziert . Aber vermutlich erst seine Veröffentlichung in der Märchensammlung der Brüder Jacob und Wilhelm Grimm brachte einen Bekanntheitsgrad mit sich, der sogar eine Übersetzung ins Englische folgte und damit einen Zugang für Virginia Woolf ermöglichte. 36 pp. Deutsch.
