Libro
Hardcover. Condizione: VG+. No Jacket. Photos, Maps, Technical Drawings, Sail and Rigging Plans, Ship Fittings Etc (illustratore). 1st. Few, if any, maritime authors have written so authoritatively on the last years of the great sailing ships that were once common on the oceans, but now represented by a handful of suvivors. The sub-title to this, his sixth book relating to sailing craft, sums up the topic matter of "The Way of a Ship."as "being some account of the ultimate development of the ocean-going square rigged sailing vessel. and the manner of her handling, her voyage-making, her personnel, her economies, her performance and her end." His book is divided into five parts --- The Ultimate Development, Technicalities., The Men, The Life, Schoolships and Some Others. Part two, for example covers Global Sailing Conditions, Handling Square Sails and Ship-Handling Under Sail. .All Villiers' experience gained square-rigged wisdom is conveyed in an uncomplicated manner with techniclal descriptions backed by complementary illustrations. It is doubtful that a better book on the last era of trading under sail has been published. It also includes what the author, in his preface, describes as "stories of some outstanding ships and shipmasters and an owner or two." thus provinding a rounded account of the ships and the men making those final voyages. First edition of 1954 from Hodder and Stoughton, 287 pages including five appendices, bibliography and index, illustrated with 74 b/w photos including frontis, 38 drawings through the book are mainly of a technical nature, particularly focused on masts, sails, spars and rigging but including full side-wiews of several notable ships. As a bonus, three colour paintings of famous ships have beem expertly added --- the first, the Kobenhavn on the verso of the frontis photo, the second, the Archibald Russell, on a blank page preceding part one with the third, the Herzogin Cecilie, on the blank page at part five. All are mentioned in the book. These were placed with a precision that enhances the character of the the book. In the same manner a small nautical decoration is applied to the front cover directly above the title panel. Both end-papers display a world map showing the most used sailing ship routes and the ocean wind systems. The blue hard covers with gilt font titles in a gilt panel are VG+, gilt spine titles are slightly sunned with slight wear at upper spine extremity. former owner name stamp centered on FFEP verso, there is a smattering of foxing on two preliminary pages with fainter spotting two following pages, otherwise the text block is excellent throughout .A quite heavy item at 900grams unpacked.
