Cox believed in kind and gentle management of the mentally ill and described hydrotherapy in both mania and melancholia. He described detailed descriptions of medications used like digitalis, derived from Foxglove, as an anti-maniacal remedy. Erasmus Darwin (1731-1802), naturalist and physician and grandfather to Charles Darwin, advocated for Cox s medical practices. Provenance: J. P. He was president of the Academy of Medicine, and of the New York Medical Association in 1858. He published Thoughts on the Connection of Life, Mind, and Matter, besides essays and medical treatises.
