Facsimile of the 1916 Sanborn fire-insurance atlas of Clarksburg, West Virginia, reproduced in full color from the Library of Congress copy. It covers the whole city of 33,000 people on the West Fork River and Elk Creek, from the stores, banks and hotels of Main and Pike Streets around the Harrison County Court House, through the glass works, tin-plate mill, brick works and oil-well supply houses, to the suburbs of North View, Adamston, Point Comfort, Stealey Heights, Broad Oaks, Goff Plaza, Industrial and the New Fair Grounds, with Norwood and Grasselli. The forty-one numbered sheets, opening with the key map, work block by block from the stores, banks, hotels and theatres along Main Street, Pike Street, Fourth Street, Third Street and Hewes Street - the Harrison County Court House and Jail, the City Hall and Mayor's Office, the Post Office, the Masonic Temple, the Elks' Home, the Goff, Empire, Colonial and Union National Bank buildings, the Robinson Grand, Orpheum and Palace theatres, the Waldo Hotel and Annex, the Gore, St. Charles, Commercial, Imperial, Glen Elk, Eagle, Parsons and K. and H. hotels, the Y. W. C. A. Public Library and the telephone exchange - through the Baltimore and Ohio passenger and freight depots, the Monongahela Valley Traction car barn, the Clarksburg Gas and Electric Company's light plant, gas works and power house, the city water works and pumping station, the Pittsburg Plate Glass and Norwood Glass works at Norwood, the Lafayette, Travis, Tuna, West Fork, Rolland, Neutzling and Hazel Atlas glass works, the Owens Bottle Machine Company, the Akro Agate marble works, the Phillips Sheet and Tin Plate Company, the Monticello and Clarksburg brick works, the McNicol pottery, the Clarksburg Casket Company, the Hart Brothers machine shop, the Star Rig and Reel works, the Oil Well Supply and Spang oil-well supply houses, the Hope Natural Gas warehouse, the Standard and Appaline oil depots, the Anchor, Smith and Standard flour mills, the Parr, Glen Elk, Montpelier and Southern Pine lumber yards and the Lange and Crist box works, to St. Mary's and Kessler hospitals, the Washington Irving High School, St. Joseph's Academy, St. Mary's High School, the Water Street, Linden, Pierpoint, Morgan, Tower, Carlisle and Alta Vista schools, the First Baptist, First Methodist, Central Christian, Central Presbyterian, Christ Episcopal, Immaculate Conception, Holy Rosary and St. Paul's Lutheran churches, Trinity Methodist, Mount Zion Baptist and Pride's Chapel, the West Virginia Fair Association grounds and race track, and the residential streets of North View, Adamston, Point Comfort, Stealey Heights, Broad Oaks, Goff Plaza, Industrial, Norwood and Grasselli. In July 1916 the Sanborn Map Company of New York surveyed Clarksburg and its suburbs for the fire-insurance trade, drawing the city, Point Comfort, Industrial, Norwood and Grasselli at fifty feet to the inch and North View, Adamston, Stealey Heights, Broad Oaks, Goff Plaza and the New Fair Grounds at one hundred feet to the inch. Every building is shown to scale and color-coded for construction (yellow for frame, pink for brick, blue for stone), with heights, uses, windows, party walls, hydrants, water mains and fire stations all marked. The index lists every street and every named business, church, school, hotel, mill and works with the sheet it appears on, and the key map places the colored sheet grid over the whole city. This Exile Books edition is an unabridged facsimile republication of the atlas: the combined title and index sheet and all forty-one numbered map sheets, the first of them the key map. Ideal for local historians, genealogists, architects, preservationists and anyone tracing a Clarksburg address back to 1916. 44 pages. 8.5" x 11". Full color. Paperback. Printed to order and shipped directly to you ? please allow up to 7 business days before shipment. Satisfaction guaranteed or you can send it back.…
