This enthralling, in-depth guide to 501 outstanding novelists, poets, playwrights, philosophers, and essayists spans the centuries as it describes writers from around the world. 501 Great Writers presents an informal illustrated history of the written word as it has been practiced by leading figures from different eras and cultures. Each biographical entry includes a critical appraisal of the artist s standing in the canon of world literature and an assessment of his or her literary innovations and cultural impact. An illustration accompanying each entry presents a portrait of the writer, and a supplementary list directs readers to recommended books by the author. Enhanced with enlightening quotes and intriguing asides, each and every entry is an entertaining and informative summary of the writer and his or her achievement.
Compiled by Professor Julian Patrick and written by an international team of literary critics, authors, teachers, and journalists, 501 Great Writers provides a truly comprehensive guide to the giants of world literature. Eclectic in its approach, this book describes a wide range of authors who have shaped the course of fiction, poetry, and philosophical thought, covering established figureheads as well as the latest firebrands. A comprehensive reference to the literary world, 501 Great Writers encourages you to gain a deeper understanding of the men and women behind many of the world s best-loved and most influential literary works.
(back flap)
For the past 25 years Julian Patrick, professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of Toronto, has directed the Literary Studies program at Victoria College a historically innovative program of world literature, translation, philosophy, and literary theory. Educated at Toronto and Yale, he has edited books on Ben Jonson and on literary theory, and has published articles on literature from Shakespeare to Auden, as well as on psychoanalysis. His current research involves the overlap between traditional mimesis and new-style representation in early modern literature from Montaigne to La Princesse de Clèves.

Descrizione dello Store
With 3 stores less than 1 hour outside the DC/Metropolitan area (1 in Gaithersburg, 1 in Frederick and 1 in Hagerstown, MD), we have the largest selection of books in the tri-state area. Wonder Book and Video has been in business since 1980 and online since 1997. We have over 1 Million books for sale on our website and another 1 Million books for sale in our 3 locations. Items on Abe are not necessarily in stock at our retail locations. Please do not call the stores to place orders for Abe Books sales. We have a very active online inventory and as such, we can receive multiple orders for the same item. We fill those orders on a first come first serve basis, but will refund promptly any items that are out of stock. Since 1980 it has always been about the books. ALL kinds of books from 95 cent children's paperbacks to five figure rare and collectibles. A merging of the old and new is where we started, and it is where we are today. Our retail stores have always been places where a reader can rush in looking for a title needed for a term paper that is due the next day, or where bibliophiles can get lost "in the stacks" for as long as they wish. In 2002 USAToday recognized us as "1 of 10 Great Old Bookstores", and we have been featured in numerous other newspaper and TV stories including Washington Post and CSpan. Members ABAA, ILAB.…
