Clive Staples Lewis (1898-1963) was one of the intellectual giants of the twentieth century and arguably one of the most influential writers of his day. He was a fellow and tutor in English Literature at Oxford University until 1954 when he was unanimously elected to the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance English at Cambridge University, a position he held until his retirement.
For centuries Christians have been tormented by one question above all – "If God is good and all-powerful, why does he allow his creatures to suffer pain?"
C.S. Lewis sets out to disentangle this knotty issue, but wisely adds that in the end no intellectual solution can dispense with the necessity of patience and courage.
"It is really a pleasure to be able to praise a book unreservedly, and that is just what I can do with 'The Problem of Pain"'
GUARDIAN
"A really remarkable book. It says so many things which seem to me to need saying today. It will help many people to revise what they had taken for granted and face possibilities which had not occurred to them."
