Pele’s tears – cylindrical, spherical, or pear-shaped drops of glassy basaltic lava from 6 to 13 mm long, named after the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes and fire.

Summit accordance – the equal or nearly equal elevation of mountain summits or hilltops over a certain region.

Dr MacDonald is an Honorary Research Fellow at the Univerisity of Glasgow, a member of the Council of the Mineralogical Society, and a past president of the Geological Society of Glasgow. Dr Burton is Head of the Division of Earth Sciences, University of Glasgow.
