Who Gets What - And Why: The Hidden World of Matchmaking and Market Design

9780007520763: Who Gets What - And Why: The Hidden World of Matchmaking and Market Design

How our lives are shaped not only by the choices we make, but by the choices we have. Insights into the most important decisions you’ll ever make, from a Nobel Prize winner.

Around you everywhere are matching markets. From applying for a job to asking someone out on a date, or getting your child into the best school or university, matching plays a crucial but invisible role in our lives. Matching accounts for some of the biggest technological successes of the decade, like Uber and Airbnb, and can even be the gatekeeper of life itself, guiding how desperately ill patients receive scarce organs for transplants.

In ‘Who Gets What and Why’, the life work of Nobel Prize in Economics-winner Al Roth provides an x-ray of the market designs you don’t see. It will change how you view the decisions you make, even where you park your car, and will explain how the most important things that we choose in life also choose us.

Book Description:

‘He's perfectly brilliant and everyone knows it. But Roth is also an articulate and witty scientist with an impish sense of humour who can make even the most complicated idea seem so simple that you wonder why you didn't think of it yourself. Roth's thinking has revolutionised the design of the "matching systems"’ Daniel Gilbert, author of the bestselling ‘Stumbling on Happiness’

‘Al's research on matching is special and unique in the economics field because it not only informs us about the world, but it tells us what we can do to make it better. It is about designing the world, and if I had to pick someone to design our world or guide us through it, it would be Al’ Dan Ariely, author of ‘Predictably Irrational’

‘In lots of domains Al and his colleagues have improved the way markets work, and made lots of people’s lives better as a result’ Richard Thaler, co-author of ‘Nudge’

‘Al Roth is a brilliantly original thinker, but he has spent his entire career solving real, practical problems. He designs markets, but has thought harder than anyone about the ethics and emotions of the marketplace. What's more, he saves lives. Not in some abstract sense: he has saved the lives of real people, and you can shake their hands, look them in the eye, and hear them tell you how he did it. We need more economists like him’ Tim Harford, author of ‘The Logic of Life’ and ‘The Undercover Economist’

About the Author:

Al Roth is the Professor Emeritus of Economics at Stanford University and the George Gund Professor of Economics and Business Administration in the Department of Economics at Harvard University and in the Harvard Business School. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Econometric Society, and has been a Guggenheim and Sloan fellow.

Roth is one of the founders of the new economic discipline of market design. His paper ‘The Economist as Engineer’ is one of the manifestos of the movement. He has also been one of the pioneers of experimental economics, and is a veteran game theorist. He was named Nobel Laureate in Economics in 2012.
