This classic science fiction and horror story, originally published in 1925, features a mad scientist secretly performing experimental head transplantations on bodies stolen from the morgue and a beautiful young woman, hired as his assistant, who befriends the head of Professor Dowell. Although written more than a hundred years ago, this "foresees not only organ transplants but also . the use of mental hospitals as prisons and the manipulation of the news media." A title in Macmillan's "Best of Soviet SF" series with an introduction by Theodore Sturgeon, who comments that Beliaev was writing at the same time as Weird Tales was transforming US science fiction. Translated from the Russian by Antonina W. Bouis. Jacket art by Richard Powers. 157 pp. Near fine in royal blue boards with a black cloth spine, silver lettering, in a near fine dust jacket (remainder dot, a few small nicks to the edges of the dj, rubbing to back cover, original price of 8.95 on front flap) Overall, a very attractive copy of a rather hard-to-find book.
