Very Good in Dustjacket. 0025794019. Translated from the Russian by Clarence Brown & W. S. Merwin. 103 pages. hardcover. keywords: Europe Russia Literature Poetry Translated World Literature. DESCRIPTION - Osip Mandelstam, born in 1891, was one of the great Russian poets who, like his friends Boris Pasternak and Anna Akhmatova, bore witness to the tenible plight of Russia under Stalin. For this the poet paid with his life. First forbidden to publish, then exiled, and finally imprisoned and sentenced to five years' hard labor for 'counterrevolutionary activities,' he died in a transit camp in the winter of 1938. But the poems - suppressed in Russia for more than thirty years - live on, a testimony to Mandelstam's courage and very great poetic gift nobly celebrated by his widow in her bestselling autobiography, HOPE AGAINST HOPE, and its sequel, HOPE ABANDONED. Though the poems reflect his life and its honor, they are by no means all of them grim. The poet took in the employment of his art what Clarence Brown describes in his Introduction as 'an incorrigible delight. There was his favorite bird, the goldfinch, its colors and attitude, to be turned into words, or a boy on a sled, or a Breughel-like winter scene.' And Mandelstam, like every other Russian poet worthy of the name, felt that his gift imposed an obligation - the people needed poetry no less than bread. Here, sensitively translated by Clarence Brown and W. S. Merwin, is a substantial selection of his work in English. Hudson River Editions are a series of reprints of outstanding titles. They include classic works of fiction, philosophy, and criticism. Each volume is bound in sturdy cloth, with complete reinforcement and foil stamping - a durable binding for long-lasting works. Clarence Brown, Professor of Russian Literature at Princeton University, is the author of THE PROSE OF OSIP MANDELSTAM and MANDELSTAM. W. S. Merwin is an acclaimed translator and the author of numerous volumes of poetry. inventory #20842. Codice articolo z20842
