Trade paperback. Condizione: Good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. 224 pages. Illustrations. List of Symbols. Formulae. Bibliography. Glossary. Index. This is one of the Holt Library of Science Series III. Contents include Rocket Fundamentals, Artillery Rockets, Orbital and Global Rockets, Lunar and Early Interplanetary Rockets, Solar System Spaceships, Interstellar Ships, and Outlook. Maxwell W. Hunter II, a visionary rocketeer, consummate aerodynamicist, project manager and policy advisor for five decades, steadfastly contributed to the nation's rocket programs and the future of space transportation. For over 35 years, starting in 1959 with the RITA single stage nuclear rocket at Douglas, the StarClipper expendable tank design at Lockheed in 1966 and the X-Rocket single stage to orbit at Lockheed in 1985, he continually pursued single stage designs and aircraft-like operations as the keys to vastly improved, economical space transportation. The potential of this approach was dramatically demonstrated in 1993 with the test flights of the Delta Clipper. He authored over five dozen technical papers. Their subject matter has included the unmanned exploration of the solar system and the economics of manned space transportation, the latter dealing with both utilization of advanced nuclear rockets and the use of chemical rockets and expendable tanks in space shuttles. He has also authored "Are Technological Upheavals Inevitable?" published in the Harvard Business Review and a rocket propulsion textbook titled "Thrust into Space." This is the original edition. It was reissued for the 50th anniversary of its initial publication. This is the original edition of Maxwell W. Hunter II's seminal textbook on rocket science and propulsion systems for space travel and continues to inspire new generations of space enthusiasts. Thrust into Space presents the science of rocket engineering in a technologically sound yet totally understandable style, and the ideas and arguments Hunter presents are as captivating and stimulating a half-century later as they were when the book first appeared.
