Condizione: Sehr gut. 228 p. Schutzumschlag am Buchrücken leicht eingerissen, ansonsten ein sehr gutes und sauberes Exemplar ohne Anstreichungen. / TDust jacket slightly torn at the spine, otherwise a very good and clean copy without markings./ Klappentext/blurb text: "Edmund Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France (1790) is one of the major texts in the western intellectual tradition. Written in response to the outbreak of the French Revolution, it has endured as a classic of conservative thought and continues to attract readers for its historical value, for its political wisdom, and for its magnificent style. -- Dr Lock begins by describing Burke's political and intellectual world, stressing the importance of the idea of 'property' in Burke's thought. He then focuses more closely on Burke's personal and political situation in the late 1780s to explain how the Reflections came to be written. The central part of the study discusses the meaning and interpretation of the work. Dr Lock rejects both the 'natural law' and 'utilitarian' interpretations as unhistorical and partial. Instead, he argues for a reading of the Reflections as a work of political rhetoric, not as an abstract philosophical treatise. Although the Reflections can be read as 'literature', it is more profitably analysed as a rhetorical discourse. In the last part of the book the author surveys the pamphlet controversy which the Reflections generated, paying particular attention to the most famous of the replies, Tom Paine's Rights of Man. He also examines the subsequent reputation of the Reflections from the 1790s to the present, noting how often Burke has fascinated even writers who have disliked his politics, from William Godwin to modern Marxists (though not Marx himself). -- This is a lively and informative study of a difficult text. It makes a major contribution to the understanding of the Reflections, and will be valuable to students of history, politics, and literature. -- F.P. Lock, who teaches at the University of Queensland in Australia, is the author of two books on Swift: The Politics of Gulliver's Travels (1980) and Swift's Tory Politics (1983)."
