Moscow, Christmas Eve, 1949. The Soviet secret police intercept a call made to the American embassy by a Russian diplomat who promises to deliver secrets about the nascent Soviet Atomic Bomb program. On that same day, a brilliant mathematician is locked away inside a Moscow prison that houses the country's brightest minds. He and his fellow prisoners are charged with using their abilities to sleuth out the caller's identity, and they must choose whether to aid Joseph Stalin's repressive state -- or refuse and accept transfer to the Siberian Gulag camps and almost certain death. --from publisher description

Physical description: xiii, 580 p ; 25 cm. Notes: Translation of V kruge pervom (romanized form). Summary: The First Circle is both a brooding account of human nature and a scrupulously exact description of a historical period. A young diplomat and scion of a corrupt ruling class, discovers an earlier and more spiritual tradition than that adopted by the October Revolution, the experience of acquiring an immortal soul. Unwisely but generously, he helps a friend in danger of arrest, only to be arrested himself and sent to a special prison. This, the archetype of the Gulag, is described with masterful psychological insight. Subject: Political persecution - Soviet Union - Politics and government - 1917-1936 - Fiction. Historical fiction. This is a first edition of the First Circle, a novel by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn (1918-2008), published by Harper & Row in 1968, before he was expelled from the Soviet Union. This is also a limited edition, as Solzhenitsyn rewrote much of it before he died; the new version was published in 2009. The book is highly autobiographical; it depicts the lives of the occupants of a research bureau made of gulag inmates located in the Moscow suburbs. Many of the prisoners are technicians or academics who have been arrested under Article 58 of the Penal Code, as part of Stalin's purges. This group was well-treated, but if they fell out of favour, they'd be shipped to Siberia. The title refers to Dante's First Circle of Hell, where the philosophers live in a walled garden, enjoying a small space of freedom in the heart of Hell. The cover of this book is a bright pink, with some scuffing. The spine of the jacket is heavily faded. The rest of the book is absolutely pristine. It has not been read; when I opened it, some of the original printer's trimmings fell out. There are no marks of any kind in it or on it. Codice articolo ABE-1758986551167
