Everywhere For Wales
Da: Crappy Old Books, Barry, Regno Unito
Valutazione del venditore 5 su 5 stelle
Paperback. Condizione: Good. There are sports books, and then there is Everywhere For Wales by Phil Bennett, which sounds less like a title and more like a vow taken at speed, preferably while sidestepping three grown men and the expectations of a nation. Published in 1982 by Arrow Books, this is exactly the sort of volume Crappy Old Books is delighted to find among the usual shelf traffic of forgotten thrillers and overconfident self-improvement manuals. It comes carrying that glorious mixture of rugby, memory, Welshness and slightly battered heroism that no algorithm has yet managed to bottle properly. Everywhere For Wales is not merely a sports memoir. It is a title with mud on its socks and poetry in its lungs. And what a title it is. Everywhere For Wales. Not ?My Rugby Career.? Not ?Reflections on the Game.? Not ?Lessons in Leadership from the Back Line.? No, this is bigger, nobler, and faintly madder. It suggests commitment on a national scale, as though Phil Bennett had personally agreed to cover every blade of grass, every emotional register, and possibly several valleys while he was at it. There is something deeply Welsh and magnificently unembarrassed about that kind of intensity. Phil Bennett, of course, was not just anybody in boots. He was one of the great Welsh rugby figures: all brilliance, nerve, footwork and that rare ability to make athletic genius look both joyful and faintly insolent. He belongs to that class of sporting heroes who do not merely play a game but seem to embody a whole style of national self-expression. Watching Bennett was not just watching rugby. It was watching imagination in motion, wearing a red shirt and refusing to go through the obvious gap when a more theatrical one might be invented instead. This means the book already carries a wonderful charge before you even open it. Sports memoirs can sometimes be earnest things, full of grit, dressing rooms and noble clichés about teamwork. But a Phil Bennett title promises something better: intelligence, stories, wit, atmosphere, and the whole glorious weather system of Welsh rugby when it still felt like a matter of almost theological importance. One does not simply remember matches in this world; one remembers where one was, who shouted, what the rain was doing, and which pass appeared to briefly suspend reason. As sold by Crappy Old Books, this copy is in good condition , which feels exactly right. A good-condition 1982 rugby paperback ought to look lived with rather than embalmed. It should suggest it has spent time in houses where people actually cared, perhaps in a living room near the telly, perhaps beside old match programmes, perhaps on a shelf where sport and literature were not considered mutually exclusive. Good condition means it has survived the decades with its spine, dignity and sporting aura intact. There is also something deliciously ironic in reading a book like this now, in an age when sport is often wrapped in branding, analytics, recovery protocols and interviews polished to within an inch of meaning. Back here in 1982, rugby still had more room for character, myth and the sort of storytelling that feels half autobiography, half chapel testimony. Everywhere For Wales belongs to that richer human world where a player was not just a performance unit but a national figure, a talking point, a source of both hope and post-match argument. And then there is the Welshness of it all, which matters. This is not generic sporting memoir territory. Wales and rugby have always had a special way of talking to each other ? through pride, pain, memory, longing, brilliance, collapse, resurrection, and the faint possibility that the outside half might redeem the afternoon. A book like this is never just about a player. It is about a place, a culture, a mood, and the small matter of a nation repeatedly investing far too much emotion in an oblong ball and being entirely right to do so. For collectors, it is a lovely thing: Phil Bennett, Arrow Books, early 1980s, and a title with real shelf charisma. For rugby readers, it offers the chance to spend time with one of the game?s great stylists in his own voice or in a voice close enough to carry the atmosphere. For shelf appeal, it is excellent. A copy of Everywhere For Wales suggests that someone in the house has proper instincts about sport, memory and national romance, which is generally a reassuring sign. It is also the kind of book that improves by age. In 1982 it would have been contemporary or near-contemporary sporting reading; now it has matured into something more charming and more atmospheric. It becomes part memoir, part relic, part dispatch from a rugby world that feels both closer and more legendary with every passing decade. Books like this do not merely tell stories. They preserve moods. So here we have a good-condition 1982 Arrow paperback: spirited, evocative, full of rugby character and gloriously unafraid of loving Wales in public. It is the sort of book Crappy Old Books likes best ? not polished into blandness, but alive with voice, period and place. Everywhere For Wales is more than a sports book. It is a pocket-sized monument to flair, national feeling and the old, beautiful idea that a gifted player might carry not just the ball but the whole emotional cargo of a country for eighty minutes at a time. If you like rugby, Wales, sporting memoirs with atmosphere, or simply the sound of a title charging nobly across open ground, this is a splendid thing to have on the shelf. Codice articolo 5900
