The grouping of the railways of Great Britain under the provisions of the Railways Act of 1921 took effect on 1 January 1923, though there had been some important amalgamations just before that date. The names of the four group companies, with one exception, were new names, in which the historical and even some of the more precise geographical associations of the names of the smaller companies were lost. The one old name perpetuated was that of the Great Western Railway, a company so individualistic that it could not be joined to either of its obvious rivals, and which at the grouping absorbed, rather than amalgamated with, a large number of small companies with which its tracks were linked. The other three company groups were the Southern Railway, the London, Midland & Scottish Railway, and the London & North Eastern. This is volume two of a trilogy, I am selling the other two volumed of this site. Ref FF 3. Codice articolo 032883
