The book represents all the knowledge we currently have on ocean circulation.
It presents an up-to-date summary of the state of the science relating to the role of the oceans in the physical climate system.
The book is structured to guide the reader through the wide range of World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) science in a consistent way. Cross-references between contributors have been added, and the book has a comprehensive index and unified reference list.
The book is simple to read, at the undergraduate level. It was written by the best scientists in the world who have collaborated to carry out years of experiments to better understand ocean circulation.

Gerold Siedler has long experience of ocean observations and research on ocean processes and circulation, mostly in major international programmes. He is a professor (retired) at the Institut fur Meereskunde, Kiel University, Germany and a former president of the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR). John Church has particular interests in the role of the ocean in climate variability and change. He leads the Polar Waters Project of the Antarctic Cooperative Research Centre and of the CSIRO Marine Research in Hobart, Australia. He was a co-chair of the WOCE Scientific Steering Group and is an officer of the Joint Scientific Committee of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP). John Gould has extensive research experience in ocean circulation, particularly in the North Atlantic. He directs the International Offices that co-ordinate the WOCE and the Climate Variability and Predictability Study (CLIVAR) of the WCRP.
This book presents the views of leading scientists on our knowledge of the global ocean circulation following completion of the observational phase of the World Ocean Circulation Experiment. WOCE's in situ physical and chemical measurements together with satellite altimetry have produced a data set of unprecedented scope and precision. This data set provides the basis for development of ocean and coupled ocean-atmosphere circulation models used for understanding ocean and climate variability and projecting climate change. The book guides the reader through the analysis, interpretation, modeling, and synthesis of these data.
This book will be of value to those interested in the global oceans, in climate variability and change, and in the oceanic uptake of anthropogenic carbon, particularly oceanographers, meteorologists, and other climate scientists.
