Targeting Chronic Inflammatory Lung Diseases Using Advanced Drug Delivery Systems explores the development of novel therapeutics and diagnostics to improve pulmonary disease management, looking down to the nanoscale level for an efficient system of targeting and managing respiratory disease. The book examines numerous nanoparticle-based drug systems such as nanocrystals, dendrimers, polymeric micelles, protein-based, carbon nanotube, and liposomes that can offer advantages over traditional drug delivery systems. Starting with a brief introduction on different types of nanoparticles in respiratory disease conditions, the book then focuses on current trends in disease pathology that use different in vitro and in vivo models.
The comprehensive resource is designed for those new to the field and to specialized scientists and researchers involved in pulmonary research and drug development.

Kamal Dua is an Associate Professor in the Discipline of Pharmacy at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). Dr Dua has been recognised and named as one of Australia’s Top 250 researchers in 2025 and 2024 in Research Magazine by “The Australian” in the research discipline of Health and Medical sciences, and #1/research leader in the area of Pharmacology and Pharmacy (2025) and Toxicology (2024) respectively. With over 17 years of research experience, he has specialised in drug delivery targeting inflammatory diseases. Additionally, Dr Dua also leads drug delivery research at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research. In this role, he focuses on advancing targets identified in research projects to develop innovative formulations, taking the first steps toward clinical translation. Dr Dua’s research encompasses two complementary areas: drug delivery and immunology. His work explores how these disciplines can mutually benefit, contributing to the goal of promoting longer and healthier lives for the community. His commitment to synergy is reflected in his extensive publication record in reputable journals. Dr Dua’s research interests are centered on harnessing the pharmaceutical potential of modulating critical regulators, such as interleukins and microRNAs. He also specialises in developing new and effective drug delivery formulations for managing inflammation in chronic airway diseases and cancer.
Targeting Chronic Inflammatory Lung Diseases Using Advanced Drug Delivery Systems explores the development of novel therapeutics and diagnostics to improve pulmonary disease management, looking at the nanoscale level for an efficient system of targeting and managing respiratory disease. Prevalence of chronic respiratory diseases has amplified due to an increase in pollution and decrease in air quality. A large population is affected by these respiratory diseases including individuals of all age groups incurring a high healthcare cost. This book examines numerous nanoparticle-based drug systems such as nanocrystals, dendrimers, polymeric micelles, protein-based, carbon nanotube, and liposomes that can offer advantages over traditional drug delivery systems such as improving the pharmacokinetic behavior of drug molecules entrapped in a biological entity and rapid absorption of the nanodrug due to its high surface area. Starting with a brief introduction on different types of nanoparticles in respiratory disease conditions, there is then a focus on the current trends in understanding the disease pathology using different in vitro and in vivo models, which are important toward the onsite clinical applications and developments of new therapeutics. Targeting Chronic Inflammatory Lung Diseases Using Advanced Drug Delivery Systems is designed to be useful to those new to the field and to specialized scientists and researchers involved in the pulmonary research and drug development.
