GAFF TOPSAILS tells of an Irish Catholic community on Canada's Atlantic coast. It is set over a single summer's day in 1948, yet in the breadth of its imaginative sweep it encompasses the events, both great and small, since the founding of the village in the fifteenth century. Exquisitely written, it is a sharp and moving portrait of six individuals whose experience resonates far beyond the landscape into which they were born.
