Una delle più importanti scuole di pensiero del diciannovesimo secolo, l'utilitarismo sostiene la visione secondo cui il valore o la correttezza di un'azione risiede in quanto promuove il benessere di coloro che ne sono interessati, puntando alla ''massima felicità del maggior numero di persone''. Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832) fu il fondatore del movimento, tanto un riformatore sociale quanto un filosofo. Il suo più grande interprete, John Stuart Mill (1806-73), si prefisse di umanizzare l'utilitarismo pragmatico di Bentham bilanciando le affermazioni della ragione e dell'immaginazione, dell'individualità e del benessere sociale in saggi come ''Bentham'', ''Coleridge'' e, soprattutto, l'utilitarismo. Le opere di Bentham e Mill raccolte in questo volume mostrano la creazione e lo sviluppo di un sistema di etica che ha avuto un'influenza duratura sulla filosofia morale e sulla politica legislativa.

John Stuart Mill (1806 - 73) formed the Utilitarian Society which met to read and discuss essays. His works include On Liberty and Principles of Political Economy.
Jeremy Bentham (1748 - 1832) set out to theorize a simple and equitable legal system. The law of utility, for which is best remembered, states that the goodness of a law can be measured in accordance with the measure in which it subserves the happiness of hte individual.
Alan Ryan is Warden of New College, Oxford and is currently on sabbatical in Stanford. His other books include Property and Political Theory and Bertrand Russell: A Political Life.
