Sinossi
Il 15 agosto 778, l'esercito di Carlo Magno stava tornando da una spedizione di successo contro la Spagna saracena quando la sua retroguardia cadde in un'imboscata in un remoto passo dei Pirenei. Da questa scaramuccia nacque un emozionante racconto di guerra, che fu registrato nel più antico poema epico francese esistente. La Chanson de Roland, scritta da un poeta sconosciuto, racconta del nipote guerriero di Carlo Magno, signore delle Marche bretoni, che guida coraggiosamente i suoi uomini in battaglia contro i Saraceni, ma muore nel massacro, sfidando fino alla fine. In versi maestosi, la battaglia diventa una lotta simbolica tra cristianesimo e paganesimo, mentre l'ultima resistenza di Roland è la massima espressione dell'onore e dei valori feudali della Francia del XII secolo.
