Thomas Stearns Eliot was born in America. From Harvard he went off to Oxford, and, thereafter, he was to make England his home, in 1927, he became a citizen of Britain. T. S. Eliot was both a literary and social critic; he wrote voluminously, mostly essays and poetry. He was as Chambers describes him, "hierarchal and undemocratic." Chambers was of the further view that his best work, published in 1944, was Four Quartets, "one of the greatest philosophical poems in the language." In 1948, T. S.
