14-year-old Ted joins the Royal Navy in 1914 as a cabin boy. He serves on the destroyer, HMS Nomad, and his duties include carrying ammunition to the guns. Ted takes part in the Battle of Jutland, the last major naval battle. His ship is sunk and hesurvives to be taken as a Prisoner of War. Ted is held at the camp at Brandenburg, deep in the heart of Germany. As he sees men die in the freezing winters or be shot for attempting to escape, he is determined to make a run for home. Luck comes hisway when he finds an old boat. He sails down rivers to the sea where he is picked up by a British submarine.

Martin Booth was born in Lancashire but brought up in Hong Kong and Kenya. He describes himself as an inveterate traveller, writing on travel and conservation topics for several newspapers and magazines. His other writing interests include poetry, literary criticism and film and TV writing - he was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1998. Martin lives in Somerset.
