The SAS (Special Air Service) is surrounded by secrecy and hedged by controversy and has, from the start, flouted military conventions. It was the brainchild of a young Guards' officer, David Stirling, and it was raised in 1941 to launch a series of daring raids in the North African desert. The regiment fought in Sicily, Italy and north-west Europe before being temporarily disbanded in 1945. THE SAS AT WAR traces the history of Stirling's creation from its birth. The author reveals the truth about the early days of the SAS with the help of previously unpublished military records, and shows how this unique fighting force overcame the disapproval of the military authorities to win glory and fame.
