In a series of interviews with senior professionals in the police, the courts, and the prosecution, probation, and prison services, he reveals the extent to which their values determine and shape policy. Although the interviews show there are professionals anxious to uphold liberal and humane values, they make disturbing reading and raise important questions about the operation of criminal justice in Britain.
