The Oxford Advanced American Dictionary helps learners understand what words mean, and how to use them correctly.
The content is based on research with teachers in the USA, and is informed by an Advisory Board of language experts comprising Jayme Adelson-Goldstein, Cheryl Boyd Zimmerman, Keith Folse, and Alison Rice.
The dictionary identifies the Oxford 3000™ keywords - the most important words to know in English. These 3,000 words are used as the defining vocabulary, so explanations are easy to understand. You can download the full Oxford 3000™ list from the dictionary CD-ROM to use as a revision checklist or as a basis for a vocabulary syllabus.
The 85,500 corpus-based examples show how words work in practice, helping students use words correctly.
The Oxford Advanced American Dictionary CD-ROM includes the full A-Z dictionary, spoken words, a searchable Picture Dictionary, a Topic Dictionary and the option to create personal word lists. A pop-up Genie gives the meaning of words students find when working in Word, in e-mails or on the Internet.

Cheryl Boyd Zimmerman specializes in second language vocabulary acquisition, an area in which she is widely published. She teaches graduate courses on second language acquisition, culture, vocabulary, and the fundamentals of TESOL, and is a frequent invited speaker on topics related to vocabulary teaching and learning. She is the author of Word Knowledge: A Vocabulary Teacher's Handbook, and Series Director of Inside Reading, both published by Oxford University Press.
