Intelligent Systems and Control: Principles and Applications is a textbook for undergraduate level courses on intelligent control, intelligent systems, adaptive control, and non-linear control. The book covers primers in neural networks, fuzzy logic, and non-linear control so that readers can easily follow intelligent control techniques. Design principles for fuzzy and neural control schemes have been enumerated with an easy understanding for readers. Stability analysis of control systems have been provided with rigour. Intelligent control systems have been simulated for benchmark non-linear systems across disciplines such as electrical system, electro-mechanical systems, and process control systems. Details of real-time experiments for cart-pole inverted pendulum system and seven degrees of freedom (DOF) robot manipulator using intelligent control schemes have been included in the book to illustrate efficacy of these advanced control schemes. A chapter on quantum neural networks and its application has been included to illustrate the importance of the emerging research in quantum computational intelligence in control. Many examples with Matlab codes have been provided for readers to comprehend the subject matter provided in this book.
Each chapter includes a set of exercise problems for readers to get well-versed with the subject. C-codes for selected exercise problems have been included in the CD accompanying the book. Simulation results and experimental videos are also included in the CD. This book can be used as a reference for courses such as Artificial Neural Networks and Fuzzy Logic, Artificial Intelligence, Instrumentation and Control, and Advanced Control Systems. Also practicing engineers in R&D sectors will be greatly benefitted from this book.

Dr. Laxmidhar Behera is currently Associate Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Kanpur. He has recently joined ISRC, UUM as a reader on a sabatical from IIT Kanpur. A Ph D from IIT Delhi, he has worked as Assistant Professor in BITS Pilani during 1995-1999 and pursued his post-doctoral studies in German National Research Center for Information Technology, GMD, Sank Augustin, Germany. He has also worked as visiting researcher/professor in FHG, Germany, ETH, Zurich, Switzerland. Dr Behera works in the area of intelligent robotics and control in general. His specific areas of research are visual motor coordination, advanced neural learning algorithms, advanced control architecture, visual tracking and obstacle avoidance of mobile robots, visual navigation and data modeling using soft-computing approaches and quantum neural networks. He has published more than 90 papers in refereed journals and conference proceedings.
Dr. Indrani Kar is currently working as senior project engineer at IIT Kanpur. She obtained B.Tech. degree from Haldia Institute of Technology and M.Tech degree from IIT Kharagpur. A Ph D from IIT Kanpur, she has published a number of research papers in the area of intelligent control.
Dr Laxmidhar Behera is currently Associate Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering. IIT Kanpur. He has joined the Intelligent Systems Research Center (ISRC). University of Ulster, UK, as reader on sabbatical from IIT Kanpur. He obtained his B.Sc. (engineering) and M.Sc. (engineering) degrees from NIT Rourkela in 1988 and 1990, respectively. A PhD from IIT Delhi, he has worked as Assistant Professor in BITS Pilani during 1995-99 and pursued his post-doctoral studies in the German National Research Center for Information Technology, GMD, Sank Augustin, Germany. Dr Indrani Kar is currently Assistant Professor at IIT Guwahati. She obtained her BTech degree from the Haldia Institute of Technology and MTech from IIT Kharagpur. She holds a PhD from IIT Kanpur. She worked as Senior Project Engineer at IIT Kanpur before joining the present assignment. She has published a number of research papers in the area of intelligent control.
