'The commentary before me now fully matches the extraordinarily high standard of the majority of these contributions to our studies, and is, to an even greater degree than its predecessor, indispensable for anyone seriously interested in early Greek poetry, religion, thought and language. What makes this commentary even better than its predecessor is a now matured familiarity with Greek and Latin language and literature - a familiarity allowing the most sensitive appreciation throughout of when and how Hesiod might have expressed himself differently. It likewise produces impressive emendations, not only in the text of Hesiod, or in the various bodies of Hesiodic scholia, but in the numerous authors West has cause to cite incidentally to illustrate his author.
