G. N. Groffman's introduction to Standard Arabic takes absolute beginners to a level at which they will be able to read, write, and speak Arabic with some proficiency. Gerald Groffman studied Russian and French at the University of Oxford and Arabic at the University of Exeter. He was Head of Oriental Languages at Marlborough College from 1973 to 2000. Between 1976 and 1983 he established the Schools Arabic Project to encourage the teaching of Arabic.
