Ecclesiastical Buildings.----'History and Description of the Cathedral--Bishop's Palace--Deanery--Prebendal Houses--College--Grammar School--Bishop's Cloisters--Parochial Churches, and Burial Grounds--Dissenting Chapels--Old Monasteries. jF the various Public Buildings which attract notice, and excite investigation, those dedicated to divine worship are almost always the most interesting. The common practice of all countries has been, among other methods of expressing the general sentiment of the immensity and perfection of the Supreme Being, to shew it by the magnificence and elegance of the buildings set apart for his service; and the City of Hereford has not been wanting in this respect: its churches are large, lofty, and commodious; the Cathedral is, however, its chief boast; and a person's mind must be insensible, indeed, whose thoughts are not elevated and improved by an entrance into this sublime building. The original Cathedral of Hereford must doubtless have been as ancient as the See; but the account of its existence in the rtign of Offa, the powerful King of Mercia, is the first that is recorded: it was then dedicated to St. Mary, and, according to Polydore Virgil, was magnificent. The distinction which the Church had already attained, was at this period much increased by the removal to it of the body of King Ethelbert before mentioned: the concourse of Pilgrims which visited the magnificent Tomb that had been built by Offa to the memory of the murdered Prince, added much to its celebrity; and, in a succeeding age, Milfrid, as before related, in consequence of the miracles which were said to have been performed at the place, built a new Church of stone, and, in honour of the deceased Saint, dedicated it to St. Ethelbert.
