Surely it is not saying too much to affirm, that but for this divine provision man's better life would be worn out in the incessant friction of worldly things; that graces might be implanted only to wither and die, as in an uncongenial atmosphere; that things seen and temporal would overbear whatever is unseen and eternal; and that, burdened by its weight of clay, there would be few excursions of the soul into the celestial kingdom, the final abode of all the redeemed. Neither is it to be overlooked by us that the world, as it rolls on, is only adding to the obligations of a day which is taken out of time for the uses of eternity. At its first appointment, indeed, there might seem less need for it--when, fresh from the hand of his Creator, man stood on the threshold of a world all but untenanted and alone. Even in patriarchal and primitive times, when an undeluged earth sent forth its tribute of praise, the altar rose from the sods, and every father was a priest: the first fruits of the ground, and much more the firstlings of the flock, kept open the communication between heaven and earth, and left greater leisure for meditation and prayer. The hands were not so engaged as not to find space to be uplifted to heaven; and amidst the bounties...
