Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. Alan Tunbridge (Jacket design) (illustratore). First UK Edition. First UK edition, translated from the German by Ralph Manheim. The book was originally published as "Knulp : Drei Geschichten aus dem Leben Knulps" in Germany in 1915, and in English translation by Farrar, Straus and Giroux in 1971. Jacket design by Alan Tunbridge. ***Very good in light-brown cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still beautifully bright, having been protected by the dustwrapper. The boards are generally clean but there is some tape off-setting from where a previous owner has loosely covered the dustwrapper and taped this to the book (please note that the tape is now gone - just some offsetting marks). Head and tail of spine just slightly rubbed and creased. Corners sharp. Page block edges lightly foxed. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also very good with no inscriptions except for remains of a pencil price at the top corner of the half-title page. No foxing to interior pages. Pages clean. No creases or tears. There are some light strips of tape offsetting marks to the endpapers (from the previous owner's taped dustwrapper). ***In a near fine illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of £1.40 net. The dustwrapper is complete with the extremities just very slightly rubbed and creased. Edges of foldover flaps just slightly creased also. No chips or tears. No fading. Dustwrapper bright. ***223mm x 142mm. 114 pages. ***'Hermann Karl Hesse (2 Jul 1877 - 9 Aug 1962) was a German-born Swiss poet, novelist, and painter. His best-known works include Demian, Steppenwolf, Siddhartha, and The Glass Bead Game, each of which explores an individual's search for authenticity, self-knowledge and spirituality. In 1946, he received the Nobel Prize in Literature. The three stories about a tramp, Knulp, which Hesse wrote between 1907 and 1914, are part of his "Gerbersau" tales.' (Wiki) ***'First published in 1915, "Knulp" was Hesse's most popular book in the years before "Demian". This, however, is the first edition to be published in Britain. This moving and delightful boiok marked the end of Hesse's youth - the years that produced "Peter Camenzind", "Beneath the Wheel", "Gertrude" and "Rosshalde."' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***First printing of the first UK edition, in its attractive illustrated dustwrapper, in very nice, bright collectable condition. These Cape editions of Hermann Hesse's works are very hard to find in this collectable condition - the dustwrappers are very prone to curling, tearing and chipping. Uncommon now. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Codice articolo 9221
