Marek Kohn surveys unflinchingly the theory and the practitioners of race science in Europe and the United State, burrowing into furtive corners of anthropology and biology to trace the antecedents of arguments that have taken on a strange new respectability at a time when a book like The Bell Curve can become a bestseller. He shows how a distorted understanding of genetics and history is creating the intellectual climate that racial determinism needs.
Kohn also argues that science cannot be walled off from the discussion of human differences. Modern medicine has, for example, shown how some illnesses are linked to genetic factors common among certain ethnic groups. He looks forward to an enlightened science of human diversity in which knowledge of our genes, our history, languages and cultures is not used to erect barriers between people.
