The author describes the process, offering a critique of contemporary assumptions, and suggests alternatives to illustrate the process.

M. G. JACKSON spent two decades as an agricultural scientist and another two decades as an environmental educator. He participated in a pioneering effort to create a locally-relevant, community-based course for rural schools in the mountainous region of North India. He is an active participant in the global debate on sustainability.
