Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. New Edition. Unclipped dustjacket looks new. Blue cloth with bright gilt lettering. Facsimile of the 1843 edition, with a new introduction by Ponting, xx + 372 pages, illustrated by drawings within the text. The part he played in the development of power loom weaving and machine combing has earned Edmund Cartwright (1743--1823) a distinguished place among textile inventors. His achievement is all the more remarkable in that he turned to the invention of his power loom almost by accident: he recounts how, in a conversation about Arkwright's spinning machine, he suggested the need for a weaving machine-upon being told that this was impracticable, he set about inventing one. As I never before had turned my thoughts to anything mechanical, either in theory or practice, nor had ever seen a loom at work or knew anything of its construction, you will readily suppose that my first loom was a most rude piece of machinery'. It was, but after certain alterations and improvements he arrived at the machine that was eventually to revolutionise the cloth industry. His second textile invention, though more original in its principle, was less successful in its application at the time, and having lost money on both ventures he turned his inventive mind to other fields: while managing the Duke of Bedford's model farm at Woburn, where he met and became close friends with Robert Fulton, he constructed a small steamboat. Brother to Major John Cartwright, the political reformer, his friends also included Walter Scott and George Crabbe, who said of him: 'Few persons could tell a good story so well, no man would make more of a trite one'. First published in 1843, this biography is particularly valuable for its selection of Cartwright's own writings and the letters he received. Kenneth Ponting, who has contributed an Introduction, has spent all his working life in the wool industry, and is Research Director of the Pasold Research Fund. The engraving on the jacket was made from a portrait of Cartwright by Robert Fulton. Courtesy the National Portrait Gallery. Codice articolo 139183
