Highly knowledgeable, and with a gift for communicating complex ideas clearly and imaginatively, he is the author of Caravaggio: A Life Sacred and Profane, the best-selling biography of the Renaissance artist Michaelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. He is also the writer and presenter of several BBC art documentaries and the co-presenter of five series on the art and food of Italy alongside the chef Georgio Locatelli.
