We are confident, moreover, that this work should interest the student of general history as well, for it tells the story of early attempts toward advancement in culture and social better ment in this country. In confirmation of this belief, it is a pleasure to state that the introduction and first three chapters of the book, under title of The Library in Colonial New York, have been approved by the faculty of political science in Columbia University as the dissertation required of Mr. Keep for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.
