Excerpt from The Canadian Railroad Question: Arguments and Facts Submitted to a Committee of the United States Senate
The interests of Detroit and the State of Michigan in the subject-matter of your committee's inquiry is very great. This city and State are peculiarly situated. On the east we have Canada and the intervening boundary waters between Canada and the United States. Our only way of ingress and egress from and to the east by railway, save through Canada, is via Toledo, around Lake Erie.
The distance between Detroit and Buffalo by this route, is 361 miles.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a detailed examination of the Canadian railroad question, a contentious issue in the late 19th-century United States Congress. The author argues that the concerns raised by American legislators about Canadian railway competition were unfounded, and that the Canadian railroads played a crucial role in moderating freight and passenger rates in the United States. The book also highlights the crucial role of Canadian railroads in facilitating US exports and imports, particularly with New England and the West. By presenting previously unpublished archival research, the author provides a comprehensive analysis of the economic, legal, and political dimensions of the Canadian railroad question, and reveals the intricate interplay between the railroads, government, and the public.
