Excerpt from Notes and Queries, Vol. 8: A Medium of Intercommunication for Literary Men, General Readers, Etc.; July-December, 1877

There still remains the anomaly of the adoption in England after the Conquest of the term Whit sunday, about the same period that the Germans abandoned its equivalent. The only explanation which appears at all satisfactory is the influence of the Danes and Northmen, who were dominant in England at or a little before that period, and whose speech and habits were identical with those of the Icelanders.
