Excerpt from Protestant Principles
Protestant This word has come in current use to be restricted in meaning to bearing witness against something; but the original and proper meaning is to bear witness before (the world); and the witness which we as Protestants bear is in the first place a positive witness to the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ in its original simplicity and purity; but, inasmuch as the Church of Rome has departed in so many particulars from the Gospel as proclaimed by Christ and His Apostles, it is impossible to bear witness for the truth without at the same time lifting up a testimony against the errors which have obscured it. It will be Observed that from this point of view those only have a right to be regarded as Protestant who hold Evangelical doctrine.
