Le calcul géométrique a été deviné par Leibniz (1679) (1) qui, le premier, reconnut l'opportunité, ou plutôtla nécessité, d'opérer directement sur les éléments géométriques, tandis que la Géométrie analytique opère sur des nombres qui ont une relation indirecte avec les éléments qu'ils représentent. Mais l'opération géométrique, introduite par Leibniz, n'a pas les propriétés ordinaires des opérations algébriques; aussi l'auteur n'a - t - il pu pousser bien loin les recherches géomé triques.
