Excerpt from Philippe Pinel Et Son Œuvre: Au Point de Vue de la Médecine Mentale
Nous avons choisi pour sujet de notre thèse inaugu rale la vie de Pinel et son oeuvre au point de vue de la médecine mentale. Ce sujet nous est cher à plus d'un titre. Enfant, nous avons été élevé au milieu de souvenirs et de traditions de famille où revivait la grande figure du médecin philanthrope. Notre travail se divise en trois parties dans la première, la biographie, nous nous sommes efforcé de faire connaître l'homme et son carac tere dans la seconde, pour permettre de mieux apprécier l'oeuvre de Pinel, nous avons esquissé le tableau de la science mentale au cours des siècles jusqu'au jour où il vint la réformer; enfin notre dernière partie est l'exposé de cette réforme et de la réalisation de l'oeuvre du méde cin de la Salpêtrière. Pour terminer, nous avons cru qu'il serait intéressant d'ajouter à nos recherches un certain nombre de lettres de Pinel où il se peint lui même. Nous espérons n'avoir pas trop démérité de nos juges dans l'accomplissement dela tâche que nous nous sommes imposée.
Au moment d'achever nos études médicales, nous pro fitons de l'occasion qui nous est offerte de rendre un témoignage public de gratitude à nos maîtres dans les hôpitaux. Nous adresserons d'abord l'expression de notre p0f0fld€ reconnaissance et de nos sentiments les plusaffectueux a notre cher maître, M. Le professeur Ball qui, après nous avoir éclairé de ses conseils et de ses leçons, a bien voulu accepter la présidence de notre thèse.
