Nur wenige gangbare Passe fuhren von dem syrischen Gestade über die Höhe des Libanon nach Coelesyrien und über die Kette des Antilibanon nach den östlichen Hoch ebenen, so dass ein directer Verkehr zwischen den Küsten städten und dem Innern Syriens nur auf der Hauptstrasse zwischen Beirut und Damascus von Bedeutung ist, sonst aber auf weitem Umwege den Antilibanon umgeht und die Häfen von Alexandrette und Tripolis zum Ausgangspunkte hat. Leider mangeln Syrien grössere schiffbare Flüsse, welche die Verbindung mit der Küste und dem Innern erleichtern würden.
