Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book investigates the religious arc of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, whose own spiritual journey had a profound influence on religious thought in the 18th century. The author argues that, rather than being a proponent of atheism as is commonly believed, Rousseau was a religious man, dedicated to a Christianity stripped of its dogmatic excesses and in harmony with the teachings of nature. The author traces the evolution of Rousseau's thought, from his early Calvinist upbringing in Geneva to his later rejection of traditional religious dogma, and ultimately to his construction of a personal creed that emphasized the importance of sentiment, conscience, and the innate goodness of humanity.
