Il y en avait parmi ces matériaux qui étaient connus et auxquels il semblait bien qu'on pourrait se fier; mais ceux-là étaient presque toujours incomplets ou ne reproduisaient que quelques fragments de l'ensemble. On ne possé dait là guère autre chose que des échantillons, qui pouvaient faire deviner la réalité, mais qui, bien loin de satisfaire le désir des antiquaires, ne ser vaiont qu a augmenter leur impatience.
