In the New Tellament, alfo, we perceive the fame mode of infirué'tion adopted as in the Old. Our faith, indeed, is fixed by an exprefs and authoritative de claration of the truth: but it is not taught in the fame fyfiematical way as in the generality of human writ in s. A confiderable portion of this little volume is hifiorical and accordingly, to explain or inculcate the principles of our religion, it refers us to facts and ex amples. Thefe we {hall endeavour fairly to repte fent; pointing out at the fame time the practical im provement of each circumfiance as it occurs. Though we (hall neceil'arily be led to inlift on evangelical doctrines, for they will offer theml'elves to our notice, and furely they are too important to be overlooked, yet we {hall not lofe light of the original intention, of deducing profitable lefl'ons for the regulation of our conduct from the principal lives and characters which are recorded.
