Excerpt from Essays in Retrospect: Collected Articles and Addresses
LD men are supposed to have the privilege, for a reason that I do not pretend to understand, of talk in g about themselves. This privilege I have used in a some what difierent way by reconsidering thoughts that I have expressed at various times during an unusually longcareer, and I have here assembled those essays and addresses which I could not bring myself wholly to destroy. They represent some of the chief interests which I have had for many years poetry, painting, teaching, and, above all, that strange position in which man finds himself in a universe that eludes all comprehension. I now fling them out like the bantlin g on the rocks, to live or die, in the hope that they may not be without some casual interest to those con cerned, like myself, with some of the more significant problems of our little life.

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This series of essays and addresses were written by celebrated Yale professor and literary critic, Chauncey Brewster Tinker. The author revisits thoughts he has expressed over his career on topics ranging from poetry, painting, and teaching to the strange position occupied by man in a universe that eludes all comprehension. With an engaging and sometimes humorous style, Tinker considers the privilege of old ageâ"the ability to talk about oneselfâ"as he reflects on a rich life filled with notable contemporaries, inspiring students, and the ideas that have shaped his worldview.
