Supra iam dixi me ubi id fieri potuerit titulos elegisse non fidei tantum sed etiam lectionis certae: quos scilicet descripserunt homines artis nostrae penti ut Smetius Marinius Borghesius Henzenus Rossius Renierus Mommsenus Huebnerus alii. Me ubi horum virorum testimonio uti licuit semper falsas aliorum auctorum lectiones neglexisse nemo improbabit; sed reliquis quoque inscriptionibus, quas a'viris minus pe ritis descriptas habemus, varias lectiones parca manu addidi ibique tantum ubi gravioris momenti res in discrimen veniebant. Item non nisi unum plerumque auctorem unumque opus idque omnium gravis simum laudavi; liber enim qualis hic est amplo litterario apparatu non ornatur sed oneratur. Operi citato testis qui monumentum de scripsit nomen non adiunxi, ubi nimis ignotus mihi videbatur esse quid enim in hoc 0pus0ulo innumerabiles illi auctores sibi voluissent laudati qui colligendis inscriptionibus sive in patria sive in itineribus suis repertis optime quidem de litteris bisce. Meruerunt, quorum tamen nomina hodie non novit nisi qui totus his studiis deditus est. Omnino semper teneant volo qui libro meo utentur, eum praecipue iis destinatum esse qui his studiis Operam dare incipiant, meque ab usu magnorum corporum epigraphicorum non sevocare voluisse sed potins viam ad eum munire.
