Les anciennes chansons, manuscrites ou imprimées, ont généralement l'indication du timbre (air) sur lequel elles ont été composées, parfois il y a même plusieurs timbres au choix, ce qui déroute le chercheur, car ces thèmes indiqués n'ont pas toujours la même mesure rythmique ou la même coupe de vers.

Il y a encore une autre difficulté pour retrouver un ancien air, c'est que cet air ou mélodie originale, après avoir vécu pendant des années avec un texte primitif, de nouvelles paroles écrites sur ce même air, et ayant eu le bonheur de plaire, viennent rompre cette ancienne liaison les nouvelles paroles remplacent les anciennes_ qui disparaissent complètement. L'air ayant survécu est désigné par le premier vers du texte nouveau, qui devient son timbre.
